Having grown up with a strong make-do-an-mend ethic, I create my artwork out of everything that man (and nature) discards. I find my material washed up on the beach, on fields and lanes, in skips and amenity sites – you name it! My jewellery is often combined with elements bought in charity shops.
My art should be seen on many levels: On the one hand, as a commentary on the sooon to be former glory of our beautiful world we seem so intent on destroying – through ignorance, carelessness, selfishness and greed.
But on the other hand, I cannot but help seeing the poetry in discarded and unloved things. My motto is a short poem by the German Romantic poet Joseph von Eichendorff:
A song lies slumbering in all things / that are dreaming on and on / and the world begins to sing / if you but find the magic word.
