Philippa Clare Byrne is a wild witch apothecarist of the Isle of Man. Her apothecary
practice works in harmony with the rhythms of nature, especially the 8 phases
of the Moon. Our Moon is often described as humanity’s oldest temple, and since
the dawn of time it has been the recipient of countless prayers. Its
gravitational impact on tides and the female cycle (often referred to as
‘moon-time’), is well-known, as is its mooted effect on poetry, mysticism and
madness. What is less ‘remembered,’ is its influence on Earth’s entire body of
water, and the implications this has for the planting, irrigation and gathering
of our indigenous and medicinal plants. The true apothecarist’s job is
therefore not a day job. It is an ancient Moon discipline, and a way of being
that enables the practitioner to harness the healing powers of herbs and
